ASAE Studies in the area of risk assessment

The ASAE has, among several missions that is assigned, to collect and analyze data to allow the characterization and risks assessment that have direct or indirect impact, in the food safety, ensuring a transparent communication to the public about risks and promoting the dissemination of information on food safety for consumers. In this context, ASAE is the national liaison body with its similar entities in European and international level, through the appointment as the focal point of the EFSA on scientific and technical matters.

ASAE Studies in the area of risk assessment

Regarding the activities carried out by this Authority and the powers assigned to it, a work program aiming to provide a more structured definition of objectives, with a temporal continuity essential for an activity assessment and risk communication was created more coherent and efficient. Its creation has become indispensable for the importance that this organization takes its responsibility for the Risk Assessment and Communication in the food chain. So, the existing work program is a cornerstone in the definition of a guideline with regard to the Communication, Assessment and Food Safety. The work program includes the collection of information on the topic under study, assessment and communication of risk involved, and finally assessing whether the measures triggered by ASAE, or from a situation at the end of the study.

At this moment are happening simultaneously three studies, thereby fulfilling the established program:

  1. The first study is already in the final stage, the stage of risk assessment, which goal is to evaluate the risk exposure of specific stimulants in adolescents from 10 to 18 years of the Lisbon District, through the consumption of energy drinks and soft drinks. The methodology was based on the application of the "Survey habits of consumption of energy drinks and soft drinks among adolescents from 10 to 18 years," adapted from the survey conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA);

  2. The second study is the process of collecting information, and aims at assessing the risk of exposure to chemical contaminants in fish consumed in Portugal;

  3. The third one, only possible through protocol with INFARMED, aims to identify the presence of banned active substances in supplements for weight loss and to communicate the risk associated with their consumption.

It is still in a planning phase a scientific study about the prevalence of E. coli and L. monocytogenes in samples of raw milk and cheese made from raw milk.

This program allows not only to develop several studies to provide this entity with information about the reality of the country on the risks associated with food consumed in Portugal but also to define strategic measures under other activities of the ASAE, including:

  1. To provide a more integrated choice of the themes in the scientific journal "Riscos e Alimentos", semiannual, aimed at a third target audience, detailed knowledge of the scientific point of view, allowing thus, to communicate in at least three levels of language;

  2. Thematically guide the choices of samples under the National Sampling Plan (PNCA), allowing the use of various tools that the risk assessment applies in a more integrated and efficient manner;

  3. To collaborate in the definition of the annual activities plan of the Specialized Technical Committees;

  4. Disclose transparent, accurate and appropriate information to enable consumers to make their choices according to their own criteria;

  5. Increase trust and credibility with the target audience, by all participants in the risk assessment and management process.
